An Example of Civil Discourse?

As the federal government shutdown is almost an hour away, I’m hard-pressed to give either political party kudos in their negotiation strategy or in their public postering.  However, in the Oregon state house Representative Jefferson Smith has been able to do the seemingly impossible – get Republicans and Democrats to work together on an impressive undertaking.  He got several law makers to insert the words from Rick Astley’s cheesy 80s hit Never Gonna Let You Down into their floor speeches so he could make a fun video prank.

According to Yahoo news:

The lines had to be delivered on the House floor during a lawmaker’s regular floor speech–which is, under Oregon law, videotaped for public records purposes. And the lines of the lyrics had to be spread out, so as not to tip off the state House clerk or other observers to what lawmakers were up to.

Cue the “Rick-roll.”  Enjoy

Hat tip – the Dish

ps – Now CNN is reporting that a deal has been reached to avoid a government shutdown.   Dare I give credit to the karma from the Oregon freshman lawmaker?   Giving credit to Rick Astley would mean the apocalypse is upon us.
