Mid Trip Reactions – the Israel Live Blog Cont’d

We’re about halfway through our trip, and I have to say that’s it’s been great so far and live blogging has been more challenging than anticipated as we’ve been on the go so much that there’s not as much time or wifi access as I had anticipated.  That said, we’ll certainly do some post trip posts.

We spent our first three days in and around Jerusalem, a much more beautiful and enjoyable city than I had imagined.  I’ve enjoyed our touristy time in the Old City, seeing the sites, but my favorite part was visiting the Israeli Supreme Court.  We were most fortunate to have Justice Jourban (sp?) speak with us about Israeli issues of justice, most notably balancing issues of security and human rights.  Being the first Arab member of the Court, issues of human rights were very important to him.  His argument is simple and elegant – human rights embody democratic rights, the foundation of the state and therefore must be protected.   I couldn’t agree more.

Everyone in Israel has a story and they want to share it.  Moreover, the stories (so far) have been compelling.  Who knows if there’s been embellishment (maybe/likely?), but still.

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m no foodie.  Food = sustenance in my book.  That said, the food has been fantastic.  Today’s lunch was in a hole in the wall at the Jerusalem market – beef and potatoes – and it was the best ever.  Last night we ate at a restaurant that prepares biblical food as it was cooked in biblical times, it was unbelievable.

And, the religious significance of Jerusalem is overpowering, and in a good way.  That’s one thing about being so important to 3 religions – since they share the stage, you have to discuss them all, which helps from being overpowered by any one in particular.  All have been touching and inspiring.  I’m now interested in learning more about the history and relationships (rivalries?) among the Christian denominations – Greek Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, Coptic, Catholic, etc.

Finally, I’m looking forward to more differing views on Palestinian-Israel issues.  Everyone we’ve met so far has been optimistic for a workable solution, not surprising as we’re in the conflict resolution field.   We begin our meetings with Arab groups tomorrow, may they be as enlightening and inspiring as those we’ve already had.
